Don't take work sitting down
How do you spend your time at work? Do you mostly sit, stand or do you do a mixture of the two? If you find that you spend most of your day sitting, you are not alone. According to data collected as part of the 2016 Emory Health Risk Assessment (HRA), 52 percent of Emory employees report sitting most of their workday. The recently launched Active Works program from Healthy Emory is a new way to define what it means to be active at work. Even if you spend most of your day on your feet, do you make time to stretch or take some relaxing breaths to re-energize your mind and body? The benefits of moving more are endless, including less stress, better circulation and clearer thinking.
Active Works is designed to help Emory employees increase movement and working healthier – not harder -- throughout their workday. This campaign offers a variety of ideas, activities and resources for any work setting. Curtis Williams, wellness specialist, says, “Active Works offers something for everyone and is designed to help us be our best self at work, which usually spills over to our lives outside of work.” Williams adds, “For many of us, our work culture includes sitting at a desk for most of the day, back-to-back meetings, short lunches and mid-afternoon sleepiness, followed by stiff or sore muscles. Active Works is a way to help us feel better and have more energy.”
Active Works is designed to counter these norms to promote a healthier workplace by injecting fun, quick and easy-to-do options that anyone can add throughout their day. For those who already spend much of the day on their feet, Active Works encourages activities like stretching, muscle relaxation and breathing exercises.
Active Works offers a number of online tools and resources, such as how to set up a walking meeting, office-friendly exercises, walking maps, stretching and breathing videos, real-time Emory shuttle maps and movement-friendly options for traveling to and from work.
